Five Shoes Built to Last 10+ Years (And Why)

Good Shoes Are Worth the Investment: Built to Last 10+ Years

Most people are scared off by the $500 price tag on a pair of shoes. Interestingly enough, they shouldn't be. The $100 cheap shoes you've been replacing every year? Those are the really expensive ones. In your quest to temporarily save some money, you end up spending much more over the years.

Here's the short version: a properly made, Goodyear Welted Shoe with High Quality Full Grain Leather, resoled once or twice over its life, has a cost per year of around $50–80. A fast-fashion shoe at $120 with an average 12 month life span? That's $120 per year, every year, forever, with nothing to show for it at the end.

Surprisingly, it will cost you around $1-1.25 USD per wear, for a $500 excellent shoe. That is real value.

If you want to delve into the details and mathematics, I wrote a comprehensive article on Misiu Academy explaining the math, cost per wear, the construction differences, and how to spot a real investment shoe versus a marketing one. [Read the full article on Misiu Academy →]

Five Pairs Built for the Next Decade

Once you finish reading the other article, you might be curious to look into some suggestions.

Here are five pairs curated from our current selection that meet the four criteria of a real investment shoe: Goodyear welted, full-grain leather, timeless silhouette, and from makers who'll still be around in a decade to resole them.

1. Carlos Santos 9899 Handgrade Oxford in Black Calf

If you only needed one pair of dress shoes for the rest of your life, that would be a classic Black Calf Cap-Toe Oxford. Our best selling Carlos Santos 9899 Handgrade Oxford in Black Calf is exactly that: Stylish, contemporary, stunning and very high quality. It really ticks all the boxes, whether you are wearing it with a Tuxedo, your next board meeting or your wedding. This is for when you need to look and feel your best.

2. Carlos Santos 7902 Chelsea Boots in Guimaraes Patina

Just like the Oxford, the Chelsea Boot is another important arrow in the gentleman's quiver. The Carlos Santos 7902 is an exciting proposition with elegant lines, high quality leather and a handpainted, nuanced dark brown color. It is versatile to wear with suiting but also dress down for casual wear, while being extremely easy to put on. The patina deepens with age, which means this pair gets better, not worse.

3. Carlos Santos 6942 Double Monk-Straps

Another classic, the Monk-Strap dates all the way back to the Middle Ages and remains a staple even today. Versatile, buzzing with personality and very easy to put on and off. Once again, you can easily wear it with a suit in a more formal or relaxed occasion. It also works well with chinos, jeans and is perfect for strolls, shopping and date nights.

Our Carlos Santos 6942 Double-Monk Straps come with the usual perks: Handmade in Portugal, Handpainted High Quality Calfskin, durable soles and of course a Goodyear Welted Construction. We offer them in stock in two excellent colors: Algarve (Mid-Brown) and Wine Shadow (Wine Color).

4. Carlos Santos 7991 Chukka Boots in Dark Brown Suede

Probably the king of Casual stylish shoes, the Chukka Boot is one of our best selling boots in The Noble Shoe. It is comfortable, looks great, the suede is always a sophisticated choice that shows you care about your style and attention to detail. We offer it in different compositions, but our favorite is probably the one in Dark Brown Suede. It's fantastic.

5. Carlos Santos 9380 Split-Toe Field Boot in Bordo Shadow Patina

Most men love boots. Here's one that you will adore though. The 9380 Split-Toe Boot in Burgundy Patina just goes with everything that isn't black. This pair specifically is a split-toe derby boot on a medium round, elegant last — smart and casual, perfect for the months when proper dress shoes feel like overkill but sneakers are out of the question. Built to last, finished beautifully, and incredibly versatile for a boot.

The Verdict

Buying a quality isn't an indulgence. It's a long-term cost reduction with the side benefit of looking significantly better than you did before. The shoes I sell are shoes I personally vouch for, recommend to friends, and wear myself. They're built to be resoled, not replaced. My oldest shoe from Carlos Santos is 7 years old, with hundreds of miles of wear and no need to resole yet.

If you have questions about sizing, last shape, or which pair fits your lifestyle and clothing, send me a message via email or directly through the live chat. Sizing in proper welted shoes is different from what you're used to, and I'd rather spend ten minutes getting it right than ship you something that doesn't fit.

P.S.

As a reminder, I wrote a much longer piece on Misiu Academy that breaks down the cost-per-wear math, shoe construction, leather talk, and what "investment piece" actually means in practice. If you're new to welted footwear, it's worth the 10 minutes. [Read the full article on Misiu Academy →]
